TLDR is an experimental AI-powered email assistant currently in beta. This Privacy Policy outlines what data we collect, why we collect it, and how we handle it—clearly, responsibly, and with your privacy in mind.
Welcome to TLDR, an experimental AI-powered email assistant currently in public beta. TLDR is designed to help individuals better manage their personal inboxes by automatically summarizing the content of their emails and presenting clear, concise daily updates.
This Privacy Policy explains how your information is collected, used, and protected when you use the TLDR website and iOS application. Please note that TLDR is currently operated by an individual developer ("the developer") and not a registered company. The app is in early beta testing, and features may change over time as we evaluate product-market fit.
By using TLDR, you agree to the terms outlined in this Privacy Policy. If you do not agree with these terms, please refrain from using the service.
TLDR is currently operated by an individual developer as part of a limited public beta test. The purpose of this beta is to gather feedback, assess product-market fit, and improve the experience before any commercial release. At this stage, there is no incorporated entity behind TLDR, and all responsibilities, development, and maintenance are managed directly by the developer. If you have any questions about this Privacy Policy, or if you wish to exercise your privacy rights, you can contact the developer directly at quentin@tldr.af.
Once TLDR is incorporated, this section will be updated to reflect the corporate entity and its contact information.
This Privacy Policy applies to the TLDR website (www.tldr.af) and the TLDR iOS application during its beta phase. It governs how personal information is collected, used, stored, and protected when you interact with TLDR. This includes information provided through your Gmail account (via Google OAuth), data transmitted to or from our servers, and usage analytics captured through the app and website. This Privacy Policy does not apply to third-party services you may interact with through TLDR, such as Gmail, Google Cloud, or OpenAI. These services are governed by their own privacy policies, and we encourage you to review them separately.By using TLDR, you acknowledge and agree to the practices described in this policy.
During the beta phase, TLDR collects only the minimum data necessary to provide its core functionality: summarizing your personal emails. Specifically, we collect the following:
a. Google Account Information
- Your email address (used for authentication and identifying your inbox).
- Basic account metadata provided by Google OAuth (no password access).
b. Email Metadata and Content
- Subject line, sender, and date of unread emails.
- The content of unread emails is temporarily accessed to generate summaries.
- No permanent storage of raw email content on our servers.
c. Generated Summaries
- The summaries created by the AI may be stored temporarily to support features like the daily recap or read-aloud audio.
- These summaries are deleted upon account removal or at the end of the beta.
d. Device and Usage Data
- Anonymous diagnostics (e.g. app crashes, performance metrics).
- Device model and operating system version.
- No precise location, address book, or media files are accessed.
e. No Sensitive Category Data
TLDR does not knowingly collect or process sensitive data such as:
- Financial or payment information
- Health data
- Government IDs
- Biometric data
We do not track, scrape, or collect data unrelated to the service’s core purpose.
TLDR only uses your data to deliver the core functionality of the app: summarizing your personal emails and presenting them in a digestible, daily format. During the beta phase, your data is used in the following ways:
a. To Provide the Service
- Access your inbox (with your explicit permission) to identify unread emails.
- Summarize the contents of those emails using OpenAI’s API.
- Display summaries in the app and, if enabled, generate audio recaps.
b. To Improve the Service (During Beta)
- Monitor anonymous usage patterns to identify bugs, crashes, or bottlenecks.
- Assess which features are helpful to users in order to improve product design.
c. To Ensure Security and Stability
- Authenticate user sessions and verify Gmail access through secure OAuth flows.
- Prevent abuse, spam, or unauthorized use of the platform.
❌ What We Do Not Do:
- We do not sell your data.
- We do not train any custom AI models on your data.
- We do not send marketing emails.
- We do not scrape or index your inbox.
All data usage is purpose-driven, strictly limited to personal inbox management, and aligned with the privacy and security commitments outlined in this policy.
We take data security seriously and implement reasonable technical and organizational measures to protect your information. However, given the beta status of TLDR, users should understand that the service is still under active development.
a. Where Data Is Stored
- All backend infrastructure is hosted on Google Cloud Platform, which complies with industry-standard security certifications (e.g. ISO/IEC 27001, SOC 2).
- Authentication and limited data storage are handled using Firebase, a secure Google-owned service.
b. How Data Is Protected
- Transport Layer Security (TLS) is used to encrypt all data in transit.
- Access to backend systems is restricted and authenticated.
- OAuth tokens and session credentials are stored securely and never exposed in plaintext.
c. Retention
- Email content is processed temporarily and not stored permanently.
- Generated summaries may be cached briefly to enable daily recaps or playback.
- Data will be deleted upon account removal or upon conclusion of the beta, whichever comes first.
d. Your Responsibility
While we take measures to protect your data, no system can be guaranteed 100% secure. As a beta user, you acknowledge the inherent risks of using pre-release software, and agree not to use TLDR for highly sensitive or professional communications.
TLDR does not sell, rent, or trade your personal information with third parties under any circumstances. However, in order to provide the service, TLDR relies on a small number of trusted third-party providers, all of which are bound by strict data processing agreements and industry-standard security practices.
a. Authorized Third-Party Services
We may share limited data with the following services solely to enable TLDR functionality:
- Google (Gmail API & Firebase): For user authentication, inbox access, and backend infrastructure.
- OpenAI: For generating summaries from the content of your emails. Emails are sent securely and processed temporarily for summarization only.
- Google Cloud Platform: Hosts the server and handles requests securely.
b. No Analytics Trackers or Advertising Networks
- We do not use third-party advertising, marketing platforms, or cross-site analytics tools.
- No data is shared with Facebook, Google Ads, or similar networks.
c. Legal Compliance
We may disclose your data if required by law (e.g. court order or subpoena), but we have no current mechanism for doing so and would resist overbroad or unreasonable requests.
Even during the beta, we believe in giving users control over their personal data. Here’s how you can manage your information:
a. Access and Review
You can review the summaries generated by TLDR directly in the app. We do not store your raw email content, so there is nothing permanent for you to request or retrieve from our servers.
b. Revoke Access
At any time, you may revoke TLDR's access to your Gmail account by:
- Visiting your Google Account Permissions
- Removing TLDR from the list of connected apps
Once revoked, TLDR will no longer be able to access or process your emails.
c. Request Deletion
If you’d like to have your summaries or associated data permanently deleted, simply email quentin@tldr.af with the subject line “Delete My Data.” We will process your request as soon as reasonably possible.
d. Opt Out of Beta
Participation in this beta is optional. You may delete the app and revoke access at any time without penalty or further obligation.
TLDR is not intended for use by individuals under the age of 13, and we do not knowingly collect or solicit personal information from children.
If you are under 13, please do not use TLDR, access the app, or provide any personal information. If we learn that personal data has been collected from a child without verifiable parental consent, we will take appropriate steps to delete it as quickly as possible.
If you believe that a child under 13 may have used TLDR or submitted personal information, please contact us immediately at quentin@tldr.af.
TLDR is currently offered as a beta product, which means it is still under active development and may contain bugs, incomplete features, or unexpected behavior. By participating in the beta, you acknowledge and accept the following:

- Compliance with data protection regulations for enterprise environments
By continuing to use TLDR in beta, you agree that the developer is not liable for any direct or indirect consequences of your use.
This Privacy Policy may be updated from time to time, especially as TLDR evolves during its beta phase or as new features are introduced. When changes are made, the revised version will be posted on the TLDR website with an updated “Last Updated” date at the top of the page.
We encourage you to review this Privacy Policy periodically to stay informed about how your data is handled. Continued use of TLDR after a change to the policy constitutes your acceptance of the updated terms.
If a material change is made—particularly one that affects how your data is used—we will make reasonable efforts to notify you, either through the app or by email (if available).
